About Us

Who we are and where we came from

Our Mission

The New River Humane Society, Inc is committed to the control of the dog/cat population through spaying and neutering; to ensure all animals are treated with dignity and respect, free from owner abuse/neglect; and to provide them with a warm and caring home for residents locally and out-of-state.

Our Vision

We work to ensure each animal receives dedicated attention from staff and volunteers, with a focus on grooming, health, exercise, and public education regarding animal welfare.

Our History

Our group started as Citizens For The Prevention Of Animal Cruelty (C-PAC) in January 2001, rebranding to New River Humane Society in September 2004. After a devastating 2001 flood destroyed our original facility, we operated temporarily before relocating to Beckwith, West Virginia in October 2003.

In November 2022, we separated from Fayette County Animal Control and relocated to Oak Hill, West Virginia, establishing ourselves as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Today

We operate under two entities: New River Animal Rescue (rescue and adoption services) and Barks & Boops Boarding (boarding facilities whose revenue supports rescue operations).
